Bundesliga Origin
Bundesliga is a professional football league which marks the top division of German football league system. Having founded in 1963, Bundesliga has since undergone frequent changes regarding the number of competing teams, which is currently 18. Prior to the inception of the league, German football had been played at non-professional level for years before the defeat of the German national team against Yugoslavia proved to be a watershed movement.
League format
Bundesliga, like many other top leagues in Europe, follows promotion and relegation while the games are played in round-robin format. The league currently comprises 18 teams, with each of them playing others twice in home and away venues. A win will be awarded three points – it was two points before the 1995-96 season – while a draw will allow the teams to share one point and none for defeat. The team finishing top of the table after the end of the season – normally played between August and May – will be crowned the champions while the two bottom-placed teams will be relegated to 2. Bundesliga. Simultaneously, the top two teams of the second division will gain promotion to Bundesliga. Teams finishing at the top four of the Bundesliga table will earn qualification for the Champions League.
