Aston Villa are thought to be keen on signing Lucas Digne this month, and they are expected to beat the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham to the signing of the Everton defender.

The French defender has had a falling out with the manager Rafael Benitez, and he wants to leave the club as soon as possible.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Aston Villa are now in pole position to sign the player, and they have already begun advanced negotiations to pull off the transfer.

Digne has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the league since his arrival from Barcelona, and he could prove to be a quality addition for Aston Villa.

There is no doubt that the Frenchman would be an upgrade on the likes of Matt Targett.

Several other Premier League clubs are keen on securing his services, but the Frenchman favours a move to Steven Gerrard’s side, and personal terms should not be a problem at all.

The report from Sky Sports adds that the West Midlands side are yet to agree on a fee with Everton, but it is expected that they will have to pay in the region of £20-25 million.

Villa have improved considerably since the arrival of Steven Gerrard, and the January signings of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne will certainly improve them further.

The Everton defender is at the peak of his powers right now, and he knows the Premier League will from his time at Goodison Park.

He should be able to settle in quickly and make an immediate impact at the West Midlands club once the transfer is formalised.

Aston Villa have had a disappointing first half of the campaign, and they will be hoping to finish the season strongly now.
