German forward Timo Werner has now joined Chelsea after months of speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool.

Sky Sports have now explained why Werner’s move to Liverpool did not happen and how he ended up at Chelsea.

As per the report, Werner was a target for the Reds earlier this year and Jurgen Klopp even spoke to the player in order to convince him regarding a move.

The player was reportedly keen on joining the Reds as well but he had reservations about his game time at the club. Liverpool already have three world-class attackers in Salah, Mane and Firmino. Werner wouldn’t have been a guaranteed starter if he joined.

Even then, Klopp was keen on signing the player because of his talent.

However, the Coronavirus pandemic complicated matters for Liverpool. The Reds lost broadcasting revenue, matchday revenue, pre-season tour revenues and some commercial deals.

Now they are not in a position to spend £50m on one player, who might not be a guaranteed starter for them.

Chelsea, on the other hand, were looking to bring in a quality striker and they saw Werner as the perfect opportunity. The Blues were serving a transfer ban last year and they had the money to spend.

They have now decided to splurge on the German.

Chelsea negotiated Ampadu’s deal with Leipzig last year and the two clubs have a good relationship. The Blues decided to make the most of that and triggered Werner’s release clause.

It will be interesting to see how the young striker performs in England now. He has been a star in the Bundesliga this season with 25 goals and 7 assists to his name.
