Rojiblancos cruise to the top of the table after a comprehensive victory against Valladolid
There is no stopping Atletico Madrid at the moment as they have grabbed their seventh win of the season after defeating Real Valladolid 2-0 at Wanda Metropolitano.
The first half was a drab as neither side showed intentions and as a result, it was goalless at half-time. Luis Suarez, who made his return to the playing 11 after testing positive for coronavirus weeks ago, was rusty enough to make the most of his chances in the final third while Joao Felix’ presence was badly needed in the second half.
It was Thomas Lemar who gave the lead in the 56th minute when he found himself at the receiving end of Kieran Trippier’s cross. The goal marked the Frenchman’s first in a year and he lived up to his selection ahead of Felix.
Marcos Llorente put the game to bed after finding the nets in the 72nd minute, with Trippier once again chipping in with an assist.
Diego Simeone’s new look Atletico have been ruthless in the La Liga this season, winning seven straight games and have now leapfrogged Real Sociedad to the top of the table.
With Real Madrid and Barcelona looking far from their best, Atletico are without a doubt the top favourite for the league title. Simeone’s men have also fared well in the Champions League as they drew against defending champions Bayern Munich earlier this week.
