Barcelona should have sold Messi, claims Rivaldo

Lionel Messi Barcelona star hands in shocking transfer request

Former Barca star Rivaldo claims it would be overdue to sell Messi.

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo feels that Lionel Messi should have been let off the hook when he was under contract.

The Argentine’s contract is due to expire this summer and there are no signs over a renewal yet.

Amidst this, Rivaldo has condemned Barca for not letting their skipper leave in the summer.

“The previous board made a mistake by not selling Messi whilst he was still under contract.

“They could have done something similar to what Real Madrid did with Cristiano Ronaldo when they sold him and made around 100 million euros.

“It’s very painful to see how a very talented player is going to leave Barcelona for free at a time when the club is going through so many financial problems. For me, Messi’s departure is inevitable.”

Rivaldo also added that the Catalans could rely on Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele while the former Brazilian international feels that Riqui Puig should deserve more playing time under Ronald Koeman.

“I like seeing Riqui Puig given more prominence, the boy is showing his worth and he has a great personality. He reminds me of a young Xavi [Hernandez], who emerged when I was part of the squad.”

Messi has been heavily linked with a move to PSG, who are looking to sign him on a free transfer at the end of this season.

Earlier in the summer, the 33-year created a fuss by stating that he wanted to leave the Nou Camp after years, with him instead ended up staying at the Blaugrana.
