Julen Lopetegui’s side jumped ahead of Atletico Madrid to the second spot after a comfortable win against Espanyol.

Sevilla maintained their unbeaten run in La Liga after beating Espanyol 2-0 at home.

Despite Thomas Delaney’s red card in the second half, the Andalusian managed to see off the visitors after goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Rafa Mir.

The win also helped Sevilla leapfrog defending champions Atletico Madrid, who suffered their first loss of the season against Alaves, to second place in the league table. They are currently trailing leaders Real Madrid (17 points) by three points with a game left in hand.

En-Nesyri has been impressive for Sevilla this season and the goal against Alaves saw him move to the fourth in the scoring charts.

The Moroccan striker concluded the last season with 18 league goals and he is now off to a great start to the season, racking up 3 goals in 6 games.

Can Sevilla edge out struggling Atletico and Barcelona?

Barcelona are undergoing a rough patch at the moment as they are currently eighth in the La Liga table with 9 points. Although it’s early days, the Catalan giants would have to face a mountainous task to return to the summit.

Meanwhile, defending champions Atletico have struggled to be at their free-flowing best, picking up 2 draws and a defeat in 7 games.

For a better or worse, Griezmann’s return has coincided with Atletico’s downfall, with the Frenchman looking low on confidence after failing to hit the mark.

While the World Cup winner never fitted in Barcelona’s system, the return to Atletico was seen as a breathing space for him. However, he is struggling to be a difference-maker as he used to be with Diego Simeone’s side before his transfer to Barca in 2019.

Sevilla could be the beneficiary and they have a great chance to mount a serious title challenge should they maintain their impressive run.

Lopetegui currently boasts a squad full of talented players, and whilst having been a regular top-four contender over the last two seasons, the time has come for Sevilla to have a crack at the title.
