Chelsea Update: Southgate on Mount plaudits, Injury issues mounting up for the Blues

Mason Mount-Chelsea

Southgate on Mount

England manager Gareth Southgate has claimed that Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is getting the plaudits he deserves because of Thomas Tuchel’s decision to pick him regularly.

According to the England manager, when Frank Lampard chose to start the 22-year old on a weekly basis, the midfielder did not receive the same respect for some reason.

Mount has developed into a quality player for Chelsea under Lampard and Tuchel. He has a big future ahead of him and he has already established himself as a key player for the German manager.

It will be interesting to see he can guide Chelsea to the Champions League and help them win some silverware this season.

Southgate said: “I was saying in the Autumn that he is a very good player. Now Thomas Tuchel picks him, everyone agrees. When Frank Lampard did it, it didn’t count for some reason.”

Mason Mount surely getting closer not only to Gareth Southgate's Euro squad but, arguably, pushing for the starting XI. Southgate rates him so highly. Outstanding versus San Marino (ok only SM etc), now twice involved in build-up to Kane goal #ALBENG then took his goal expertly.

Injury issues

The Blues have quite a few injury issues to deal with after the international break.

Defender Thiago Silva seems to have suffered a recurrence of his injury and he is unlikely to be risked for the FA Cup quarterfinal tie now.

Meanwhile, Tammy Abraham has missed the last six matches in a row with a bruised bone in his foot and the striker is unlikely to return against West Brom.

Furthermore, Jorginho suffered a knee injury before the international break during Chelsea’s draw with Leeds United and he was recently left out of the 38-man Italy squad for their World Cup qualifiers.

The midfielder is currently working on his recovery at Cobham alongside Tammy Abraham and Thiago Silva during the international break.

According to the player’s agent the injury is not serious and he should be back in action soon.

Meanwhile, midfielder N’Golo Kante picked up a hamstring injury during France’ draw with Ukraine and the 29-year-old will miss the next two games for his country.
