Sevilla 1-0 Atletico Madrid: Acuna’s header sinks leaders Atletico

Atletico Madrid failed to go clear at the top after a disappointing defeat against Sevilla.

Atletico Madrid succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Sevilla as the La Liga leaders are starting to feel the pressure of the title race.

Marcus Acuna’s goal in the second half was enough for Sevilla to see off the table leaders.

Sevilla dominated the first half, leaving no room for Atletico to take control. Soon they were rewarded with a penalty after the foul went against Saul Niguez. However, Lucas Ocampos’ strike was well stopped by Jan Oblak as Sevilla failed to go ahead.

Nonetheless, Atletico were uncharacteristically poor for the larger parts of the game, barely creating dangerous chances in the attack meanwhile their defence was kept busy all the way.

Sevilla rightfully deserved the lead in the 70th minute after Marcus Acuna powered his header into the nets, assisted by Jesus Navas.

Atletico had a great chance to equalise after Luis Suarez set up Angel Correa brilliantly in the dying minutes, but the Argentine had his shot saved by Bono

The defeat leaves Los Rojiblancos still at the top of the table however Real Madrid are trailing only by three points at second place. Barcelona are only a point behind their arch-rivals and have also played a game less.

None of the players could be spared after such a disappointing performance especially when Atletico can’t afford to drop points in a tense title race.

Atletico will be up against Real Betis in their next league fixture at Wanda Metropolitano.

Rival watch: League leaders Atlético Madrid lose 1-0 to Sevilla away from home. If Barça win tomorrow, the Catalans are only one point away from them, meaning Barça no longer depend on results of other teams.
Back in early December, Atleti had a 12 point advantage on Barca & 6 on Madrid (with 1 less game) 4 months on, if Barca win tomorrow they are just a point behind the leaders and still have both Atleti and Madrid to play, which would put things in their hands. Hay Liga! #LaLiga
