Olivier Giroud: Chelsea set to extend contract

Chelsea intend to take up their option to extend Olivier Giroud's contract by a year to prevent him becoming a free agent in the summer.

Olivier Giroud Chelsea set to extend contract

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud is reportedly willing to extend his contract, which will keep him at the club until 2021. Previously he was linked to Conte’s Inter Milan and Mourinho’s Spur during January transfer.

The out-of-favour Frenchman, 33, looked like he would leave in January after making only five Premier League appearances and entering the last six months of his contract after the stupendous performance which helped Sarri to win Europa Cup for Chelsea last year.

But under new coach Frank Lampard, he did not get enough match-time and was linked with a move to Inter Milan as Chelsea sought a replacement during January.

But after an injury to Tammy Abraham in January, Giroud impressed the team and manager on his return to the side, scoring twice in four league games. But most importantly, Lampard praised the former Arsenal player’s attitude. Perhaps he was able to see what made the 33-year-old favourite to represent the country, despite France being a huge pool of talent fighting for the coveted blue jersey.

Olivier Giroud has been incredible in this window as a professional and a man.

We all know there has been interest, but he has been impeccable in that period, and I’ve got huge respect for him for that, and as a player.

Giroud moved from Arsenal to Chelsea in January 2018 for £18m on an initial 18-month deal. The French international then extended his contract by another year in May 2019.
