Arsenal launched investigation into £72m Pepe deal

Arsenal 4-0 Newcastle - Gunners produced Superb Second-half show

Arsenal are investigating last summer’s signing of Nicolas Pepe for a club-record fee of £72m.

The Gunners are trying to ascertain whether they overpaid for the winger as they prepare to learn from their transfer mistakes.

Pepe was brought in with massive expectations but the former Lille star struggled initially. Eventually, he did manage to adapt to the league and his new club. Pepe finished the season with some encouraging performances.

It will be interesting to see how he performs next year. There will be pressure to deliver on a weekly basis. He has had the time to settle in and now the fans will be expecting quality displays from their club record signing.

Pepe has added pace and flair to the Arsenal attack but he needs to add to his end product now. If he can increase his goal tally, he could eventually justify his massive price tag in a few seasons.

The winger finished the season with eight goals and eight assists.

The club’s new director Edu will be looking to rectify their transfer mistakes from the past and invest more carefully.

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal manage to bring in the necessary reinforcements this summer. It is evident that they will need multiple signings to get back into the top four next season.

The Londoners have already signed Willian on a free transfer. The former Chelsea midfielder has signed a massive three-year contract with the Gunners.
