Burnley have completed the deadline day signing of Dutch striker Wout Weghorst from VfL Wolfsburg for £12m after completing his medical on Sunday.

The 29-year-old signed a three-and-a-half-year contract until June 2025 with Sean Dyche’s side. He is a replacement for Chris Wood, who left for Newcastle United in a £25 million deal.

Weghorst scored 70 goals in 144 games for the Bundesliga side and has taken the number nine shirt vacated by Wood.

Reacting to the signing, Burnley manager Sean Dyche said:

“Wout is a player that our scouts have been strong on for some time.

“We feel he can add to all that we do at Burnley. His signing is a continued show of the club and team’s development.”

Burnley chairman Alan Pace added: “We’re delighted to have brought in a great talent with a fantastic goal-scoring pedigree in Germany.”

Weghorst joined Wolfsburg in 2018 from Dutch side AZ, where he scored 45 goals in 86 games. He has been capped 12 times by the Netherlands and featured at Euro 2020, scoring in a 3-2 win over Ukraine.

He is likely to feature in Saturday’s crucial home game against Watford.

In a video posted by Burnley’s official Twitter account, Weghorst said: “Hello Burnley fans. I’m really glad to be here. I’m really happy, and I’m really proud.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday in an important game against Watford.”
