David Luiz heads back to Brazil with Flamengo

David Luiz-Arsenal

Former Chelsea defender David Luiz has agreed to join Brazilian outfit Flamengo.

The 34-year-old is currently a free agent and he has been linked with the likes of Marseille, Lazio and Salernitana.

Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri who is currently the manager of Lazio was keen on signing the experienced defender this summer.

The defender’s contract with Arsenal expired in June and he is now set to return to his homeland on a free transfer. The player was linked with a return to his former club Benfica as well.

Luiz is set to sign for the Brazilian club until the December of 2022 and he should prove to be a quality short term addition for Flamengo.

The 34-year-old is past his peak and a move back to Brazil is ideal for him at this stage of his career.

The intensity in the Brazilian league is lower compared to the Premier League and the pressure to perform will not be as high either.

After a decade in European football, Luiz will now look to prove his quality in South America. He has won several trophies with Chelsea and Arsenal in English football.

The defender started his career in Brazil back in 2006 with Vitoria.  Recently, his teammate William returned to Brazil with Corinthians as well.

Flamengo are currently 5th in the Brazilian top flight but they have managed to convince the defender of their lofty ambitions and Luiz will be hoping to guide them to trophies now.
