Fiorentina appoint Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager, amid various reports linking former Napoli boss to vacant Tottenham position

Gennaro Gattuso-Napoli

Gennaro Gattuso has taken over at Fiorentina as their next manager.

According to reports, the former Italian international has replaced Giuseppe Iachini.

The 57-year-old was relieved of his duties after a poor season with Fiorentina.

The former Napoli manager did a reasonably good job in Naples, and his side narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification. Napoli finished fifth in the League table, just one point behind fourth-placed Juventus.

Gattuso’s men were held to a 1-1 draw against Verona on Sunday, and the 43-year-old left his role at the Italian club soon after. Sergio Conceicao has been linked with a move to Naples.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina finished 13th in the Italian League table this past season, and it will be interesting to see if Gattuso can help them secure European football next season. There is no doubt that it would be a massive challenge, but Fiorentina have a talented squad at their disposal.

They have one of the best young strikers in Dusan Vlahovic, who has been in red hot form this season.

The 43-year-old Italian manager was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks along with many other managers, but it is no surprise that he has chosen to stay in the Italian Serie A for now.

The former AC Milan midfielder is still relatively inexperienced as a manager, and he needs time to learn the trade before making a big move to the Premier League.

At Fiorentina, the expectations are likely to be lower than that of Tottenham Hotspur, and Gattuso will have plenty of time to express himself in Florence.

His passion and coaching style was appreciated in Napoli, and it remains to be seen whether he can succeed at Fiorentina now.
