Lyon

Struggling Lyon will welcome PSG to Groupama Stadium on Sunday looking to begin the year on a good slate following a disappointing end of 2021.

The hosts have gone from title contenders to a mid-table club in the space of six months after losing their star man Memphis Depay in the summer. Failure to replace the Dutchman has cost the hosts who come into this tie sitting in 13th place after 18 games.

They have taken 24 points from their opening 18 games (W6, D7, L5) and are closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table. Their points tally so far this season is 14 points less than they did last season after 18 matches showing how much they have retrogressed this season.

Their last outing saw them record a 1-1 home draw against Metz, which was their third consecutive draw in the league. The result brought their winless run to four matches in the league (D3, L1).

Peter Bosz’s men have picked up an average of 1.39 points per league game since the beginning of the season. But in the last eight games, their points tally have reduced to 1.13 points per game, which is 18.7% lower than their current season’s average.

With the possibility of a sack looming, Bosz will be desperate to pick up a win in this tie and avoid getting the boot. His side will need to improve on their performance if they are to avoid their first bottom-half finish since 1995/96,

They will be confident of at least scoring as they have found the net in their last 18 home Ligue 1 outings.

Possible Lyon starting line-ups

Anthony Lopes; Castello Lukeba, Jerome Boateng, Damien Da Silva; Malo Gusto, Bruno Guimaraes, Maxence Caqueret, Emerson; Xherdan Shaqiri, Houssem Aouar; Moussa Dembele.

Injured: Jason Denayer, Sinaly Diomande, Jeff Reine-Adelaide

Doubtful: Lucas Paqueta

Suspended: None

Unavailable (AFCON): Tino Kadewere, Karl Toko Ekambi, Islam Slimani.

PSG

Paris Saint-Germain will look to continue their dominance of the French top-flight league when they travel to Lyon on Sunday for the showpiece with Olympique Lyonnais.

Historically, games with Lyon always serve to be title deciders. But this year, the Parisians head to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, clearly the favourites as they are a distant 22 points ahead of their rivals.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s men have won five of their last eight matches in Ligue 1 and are averaging 2.05 goals per game since the beginning of the season in the league. They are unbeaten in ten league games and will fancy their chances of extending it further with a win here.

Their last outing was a 4-0 win over Vannes in the Coupe de France, a game that saw them record their third clean sheet in the last five games.

The visitors have picked up 46 points so far this season, seven more than they did last season after 19 matches. They are on course to win the title this year as they hold a 13-point lead at the top ahead of the round.

Possible PSG starting line-ups

Keylor Navas; Colin Dagba, Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, Bernat; Georginio Wijnaldum, Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti; Lionel Messi, Mauro Icardi, Kylian Mbappe.
