Freiburg

Freiburg will look to record their third win of the season when they welcome bottom-of-the-table Bochum to Europa-Park Stadion on Friday night.

The hosts took home all three points on Matchday three after defeating Stuttgart 1-0 thanks to an eleventh-minute goal by Italian winger Vincenzo Grifo.

In a game that saw Stuttgart enjoy the greater share of ball possession and shots on target, the hosts would count themselves lucky to escape with all three points. Even Christian Streich, who has now been in charge of Freiburg for 400 Bundesliga games, claimed that it was a “lucky win”.

The German whose side narrowly missed out on a top-four finish last season is looking to build on his side’s sixth-place finish this year. He has already begun positively having recorded two wins and one loss to Borussia Dortmund, leaving his side sitting in fifth position after three games.

He will welcome to Europa-Park looking to record a first league win at home in four attempts, having failed to win any of his side’s last three games at home (D1, L2). Given that his side are unbeaten in their last six head-to-head meetings with Bochum, he will be confident of getting a positive result when they meet on Friday.

Bochum

Bochum’s second consecutive season in the Bundesliga have begun in the worst possible way as they sit bottom of the table after three games.

The visitors were thrown to the foot of the table by defending champions Bayern Munich last weekend as the Bavarians unleashed their full wrath on the hapless Bochum, beating them 7-0. The loss was Bochum’s worst-ever home defeat in the club’s 174-year history.

It also marked the first time in 16 years that the visitors are pointless after three matchdays. After the game, attacker Simon Zoller said that he had “never been so destroyed by any opponent” and warned that his side must get competitive again as soon as possible.

Having scored four goals in each of their last two away games (despite losing both games), the visitors will fancy their chances of snatching a result in this game.

Possible Bochum starting line-up

Manuel Riemann, Cristian Gamboa, Ivan Ordets, Dominique Heintz, Saidy Janko; Kevin Stoger, Anthony Losilla; Jordi Osei-Tutu, Takuma Asano, Simon Zoller; Phillip Hofmann.
