Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was recognized as the player of the century at an elaborate awards event in Dubai on Sunday.

The Portuguese international managed to beat Lionel Messi to the prestigious award.

The likes of Gerard Pique and Robert Lewandowski were present at the event as well. The Polish striker had earlier won the FIFA player of the year award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for his performances over the past season.

The Bayern Munich striker managed to pick up the same accolade at last night’s Dubai globe soccer awards thanks to votes from fans all across the world and the jury.

Bayern Munich were named the club of the year and Hansi Flick was chosen as the coach of the year.

Real Madrid were named as the club of the century and Pep Guardiola snapped up the coach of the century award.

Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes picked up the award for the agent of the century and the likes of Gerard Pique and Iker Casillas were honoured with the player career award.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the best players in the world over the past decade and therefore the decision is hardly controversial.

Although many would argue that Lionel Messi has been the better of the two, it has to be mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo has won more accolades at the club and international level.

Lionel Messi is yet to guide his country to a trophy whereas Cristiano Ronaldo has helped them win the Euros and the UEFA Nations League.

Ronaldo said: “It is an exceptional achievement. It gives me the motivation to move forward.

“To be named the best is a great honour; I hope that this situation is over next year and that we can have more fun, thank you very much. I hope to still be able to play for more years. “
