Barcelona: Luis Suarez (41″), Junior Firpo (49″)

Getafe CF: No score.

Luis Suarez and Junior Firpo scored goals, as Barcelona moved back into La Liga’s top four with victory against Getafe. Barcelona scored goals either side of break at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, Getafe.

Barcelona started again with Griezmann, Suarez and Perez as forward trio. Suarez received lot of flak from fans in last few matches. The Uruguayan has not been having the best time of late as he was whistled as he was replaced by Ansu Fati in second half.

Suarez knew the urgency. He kept quiet and waited for his football to talk by doing what he does best, that is scoring goals. Getafe was the next match in schedule. The 32-year-old was decisive in the match, opening the scoring with a decisive goal against Getafe, which concedes very few.

He was attentive and reacted well to a long ball from Marc-Andre ter Stegen, which caught Getafe’s defence off guard. From there, everything was much easier for the Catalans. With his goal against Getafe, Suarez already has three goals in LaLiga Santander this season, trailing Pichichileader Gerard Morenoby three and second-placed Karim Benezema by two.

Firpo doubled the visitors’ lead, slotting the ball home when it rebound from Soria. Soria saved at the feet of Suarez soon after half-time, before the lively Perez dragged a shot wide from a tight angle as the visitors dominated the second period.

Getafe created several first-half opportunities but were profligate in front of goal, with forward Angel thwarted by Ter Stegen from close range and Jaime Mata blowing over the crossbar.

Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet was sent off late on for a second yellow card for a late challenge on Jorge Molina, with eight minutes to close the match.

Barcelona is now two points behind leaders Real Madrid, who drew 0-0 with city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

After Match

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has hailed his side’s battling qualities following their 2-0 win at Getafe. Goals from Luis Suarez and a first club goal for Junior Firpo secured a vital La Liga win for Valverde’s side as they look to chase down league leaders Real Madrid.

Valverde has spoken in recent weeks about the need to win more away games, and perform against sides that set up to frustrate the Catalan side. “After some recent poor performances away form home we needed to win. The players worked hard to get result, and I am pleased with that.

“It is always tough to come here (to Getafe), but it important to perform and get a result. If you want to win La Liga, you have to come and win away at hard to beat opponents.”

Barcelona manager Valverde also praised striker Luis Suarez, who has come in for some recent criticism, following his return from injury – with the former Athletic Bilbao boss hailed the Uruguayan’s perseverance in getting the opening goal in Madrid.

Ernesto Valverde also talked highly of his German goalkeeper for his contribution. He’s incredible with his feet. It’s not the first time he’s set up a goal,”Valverde said. “He gives us so much in many senses. But the assist is just an anecdote, we’ll prefer it if he keeps on making saves.”

Ter Stegen set up Suarez’s opening goal in the 41st after leaving his area to stop a breakaway. He controlled the ball with his chest before sending it the other way to leave Suárez in a one-on-one situation against Getafe goalkeeper David Soria. The Uruguay striker calmly one-touched a lob shot over Soria for his third goal of the season.

“Let’s not fool ourselves, I saw him, but not that clearly,” Ter Stegen said, with a smile. “It was the perfect timing and Luis took advantage of it. It was a wonderful goal.”
