Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw against Getafe in the Spanish League earlier tonight.
Zinedine Zidane was under pressure to rest some of his key players because of the recent fixture congestion and the likes of Kroos, Benzema, Nacho, Mendy were dropped to the bench for this game. The likes of Hazard, Varane and Ramos are out injured.
Militao masterclass
Zidane gave Odriozola and Marcelo a chance to prove their quality here and stake a claim in the starting lineup for the coming weeks.
However, both fullbacks were quite disappointing on the night and the likes of Eder Militao had to bail them out with some outstanding defending throughout the game.
Real Madrid struggled to create too many chances and they were missing the creativity of the likes of Kroos and Benzema.
Furthermore, Luka Modric had to play in a deeper position and the team missed his presence and creativity. The Spanish giants struggled to move the ball efficiently throughout the game.
The likes of Rodrygo struggled in the attack after being given a chance to showcase his worth in the absence of Benzema. He failed to grab the opportunity with both hands.
Tonight’s draw will come as a major blow to Real Madrid’s title aspirations and it will be interesting to see if they can win their remaining matches and secure the League title.
It is evident that Real Madrid do not have the depth to fight on all fronts and Zidane will soon have to prioritise the Spanish League or the Champions League.
The draw tonight leaves Real Madrid three points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid in the table after 31 games.
VAR Controversy
Los Blancos were not at their best tonight but they could have picked up all three points had the officials not ruled out Mariano’s effort.
The Real Madrid attacker put the ball in the Getafe net in the first half but the goal was ruled out for offside by the VAR. Later, Fran Martinez, who analyses Spanish League refereeing claimed that the Real Madrid attacker was in a legal position before the goal was scored.
The Spanish giants will be bitterly disappointed with the decision that cost them two points.
