Manchester United target Jonathan Clauss signs for Marseille

Ligue 1 opener postponed after Marseille confirmed 4 COVID-19 cases

Marseille have announced the signing of long-term Manchester United Jonathan Clauss on a three-year contract and Colombian forward Luis Suarez on a five-year deal.

The Ligue 1 club announced both deals on Wednesday, ending speculation linking Clauss to Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old right-back has made four appearances for France and played 40 games for Lens last season, scoring five goals and providing 11 assists.

He was thought to be on his way to Manchester United as a replacement for Aaron Wan Bissaka. But according to reports, he wanted to remain in France and play for a team that would guarantee him game time ahead of the November World Cup.

“A true right-sided piston, capable of dominating the entire right side, he has the ideal profile to fit into the game plan of [manager] Igor Tudor,” Marseille said in a statement about Clauss.

Chelsea and Wolves were also linked with the defender, who had just one year left on his contract at Lens and could have left for a very small fee.

Meanwhile, Colombian striker Suarez joins Marseille from Granada CF, where he played 38 times last season, scoring eight goals and four assists. The 24-year-old striker has four caps for the Colombian national team.
