PSG

Paris Saint-Germain will look to pick up from where they stopped when they host Strasbourg in their first official game since after the World Cup.

Fans of the Ligue 1 giants anxiously await their heroes’ return to the Parc des Princes after two of their star forwards, Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, battled it out in a fascinating World Cup final.

With Mbappe and Messi leading the scoring charts in Qatar, the Parisian club demonstrated their firepower in the land of their owner, Qatar Sports Investments. As a result, the Parisian club finished top of the clubs with the most goals in this World Cup (18), far ahead of Man City in second (eight).

They hope to continue that impressive scoring record in Ligue 1, where they are already the top scorers with 43 goals in just 15 games.

Neymar, who crashed out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals, and his attacking counterpart Mbappe are back in training. Still, Messi’s continued celebrations mean he won’t feature in this matchup against Ligue 1’s second-to-last side Strasbourg.

This will be a golden opportunity for a smooth recovery, especially as PSG is unbeaten in their last 31 home games against the visitors in the top flight (W24, D7).

However, we should expect something other than complacency from Christophe Galtier’s men, who aim to remain the only side still unbeaten in all competitions among the top five European leagues.

Possible PSG starting line-up

Gianluigi Donnarumma; Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Sergio Ramos, Juan Bernat; Carlos Soler, Fabian Ruiz, Marco Verratti, Vitinha; Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Jr.

Injured: Nuno Mendes, Danilo Pereira

Strasbourg

While PSG are fighting to stay at the top of the table, Strasbourg are battling to leave the other end of the league table.

The visitors have endured a poor season, winning just one game all season. It took two months for them to finally claim that win against Angers, on matchday ten.

And so ‘Le Racing’ come into this game winless in five league matches (D3, L2). However, all three draws witnessed them come from behind, prompting coach Julien Stéphan to praise his team’s “unity” after the 1-1 draw against Lorient before the World Cup.

Securing a positive result here would relieve some pressure on Stéphan, who could become the eighth coach to be dismissed in Ligue 1 since the beginning of 2022/23.

A meeting with PSG could be a nightmare, considering the visitors have conceded 3+ goals in the last four Ligue 1 H2Hs (D1, L3), a run that ended with a 3-3 draw back in April.

Possible Strasbourg starting line-up

Matz Sels; Gerzino Nyamsi, Alexander Djiku, Maxime Le Marchand; Karol Fila, Jean-Eudes Aholou, Adrien Thomasson, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, Dimitri Liénard; Kevin Gameiro, Ludovic Ajorque.

Injured: Colin Dagba, Nordine Kandil

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
