Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has signed a new contract with the Gunners.

The Egyptian international was due to leave the club at the expiration of his contract this summer but has opted to put pen to paper in a new deal that will extend his stay at the north London side for another 12 months.

The new deal for the midfielder comes as a reward for a stellar campaign that saw him blossom towards the end of the season. Having started the season poorly, the 29-year-old was thought to be already on his way out and was rumoured to have agreed on pre-contract terms with the Turkish club, Fenerbahce.

But after a disappointing end to the AFCON campaign with Egypt, Elneny returned to the Emirates, a better player, slotting into the midfield alongside Granit Xhaka following an injury to Thomas Partey.

Speaking after signing the new one-year deal with the option of extending for another year; Elneny said;

“I love this club and I feel part of this family. I want to continue at this amazing club, in this amazing family. I’m very excited for the future.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Elneny brings “endless energy, enthusiasm and commitment” to the squad.

“Mo is a really important part of the team,” said Arteta. “He is loved by everyone.

“He’s an important player for us on and off the pitch, a real role model to our younger players and I’m delighted he’s staying.”

The 93-capped Egypt international has made 147 appearances since joining from Basel in January 2016.
