Frank Lampard is the leading candidate for Everton manager job

Former Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard has emerged as the frontrunner for the vacant Everton job.

The Englishman had held initial talks with the Everton board since Rafa Benitez was sacked last week. But according to MailOnline, Everton will invite him for further talks on Friday as they now consider him the leading candidate for the role ahead of former Porto manager Vítor Pereira.

Caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson will also be interviewed one last time for the vacancy as the Toffees aim to wrap up their search for Rafa Benitez’s replacement within the next 48 hours.

According to the report, Pereira was owner Farhad Moshiri’s first choice candidate to replace Benitez at the start of the week. The former Porto boss made a trip to England this week and even had an interview with Sky Sports ahead of his imminent appointment.

But protests from supporters have put Pereira’s job hopes in jeopardy, leaving Lampard as the next best alternative for the job. The protesting fans even name-checked the former Chelsea boss as their preferred candidate, making his appointment even more likely.

Although Pereira is set for another round of talks with Moshiri and the Everton board, he is also considering withdrawing from the race altogether since the fans don’t want him.
