Liverpool are set to be without the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita for the next few matches due to injuries.

According to a report on the club’s official website, the Spanish international midfielder is ruled out for the next three matches with a calf problem.

Keita hurt his foot while kicking the ball during the match against Crystal Palace. The Guinean is expected to miss the next two matches for the Reds.

Klopp said: “It’s not 100 per cent clear when Thiago will be back. It’s a muscle in the calf issue, so after the international break probably – I don’t think there’s anything earlier possible. We will have to see.”

Regarding Keita, he added: “[It’s] nothing really serious, but it keeps him out of the next game for sure – and maybe a little bit longer, we have to see.”

Liverpool are currently running out of options in the midfield and all of a sudden the decision to not bring in a quality central midfielder during the summer transfer window looks like a blunder.

The Reds lost Gini Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and they decided not to replace the Dutch international.

Jurgen Klopp is already without the services of young attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott and the absence of Keita and Thiago will only worsen the situation for the German.

It will be interesting to see if the Reds can cope without their key midfielders over the next few weeks and grind out results against the likes of Brentford, Manchester City, Porto and Atletico Madrid.

Both Keita and Thiago have had rotten luck with injuries since joining the club and the two midfielders will be hoping to put their injury problems behind them and contribute on a consistent basis in the near future.
