Real Madrid covet primary target Kylian Mbappe after Barcelona masterclass

Paris Saint-Germain Kylian Mbappe

The Frenchman put on a terrific display at Camp Nou, helping PSG thrash the Catalans.

Barcelona met PSG in the first leg of Champions League round of 16 at Camp Nou and the result was not in the favour of the home side.

Les Parisiens thrashed Barca 4-1 with Kylian Mbappe at the helm, thus handing the Catalans another Champions League humiliation.

The French forward put on an immaculate display, scoring a hat-trick while leaving defenders Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet behind his trail.

It must have entertained Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid, who continue to lead the race to sign Mbappe.

Los Blancos have been reportedly keeping tabs on the 21-year-old for a long time and his performance against the Catalans must have convinced them to sign him without waiting for a long time.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino also revealed that Mbappe promised him that he would get his second win at the Nou Camp – his first came during the Argentine’s time at Espanyol – prior to the game. It shows the confidence level of the French World Cup winner and he looks more than ready to make his next step to Madrid.

Mbappe’s contract will expire in the summer of 2022 and although his teammate Neymar and Pochettino want to continue plying his trade at the French Capital club for a long time, the former Monaco star could be tempted to move away should Madrid knock at his door.

Recent reports revealed that Madrid prefers to sign  Erling Haaland this summer than Mbappe but their stance must have changed following his masterclass against Barca.
