AC Milan were held to a goalless draw against Cagliari in the Italian Serie A earlier tonight.

The home side needed a win to secure their place in the Champions League for the next season, and tonight’s result will come as a blow to them.

The Rossoneri will now have to win their final game against Atalanta in order to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

Toothless AC Milan attack, again

The home side were lacking sharpness, and they will have to produce a better attacking display if they want to beat Atalanta in their next game.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured and Rafael Leao on the bench, Milan struggled to convert the very few chances they had during the game.

In fact, Milan scored 12 goals in the last three games, without any contribution from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But today was a different day for the Milan side. Stefano Pioli tried to change the game in the second half, and he brought on Rafael Leao to add more guile to his attack, but Cagliari managed to contain the home side and grind out a point.

The imperious Diego Godin

The former Atletico Madrid star was inspiring from tonight, and he helped his side keep a clean sheet against Milan away from home.

The Uruguayan defender could have easily won the game for his side, but his towering header was clawed away by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the second half.

Godin put on a defensive masterclass against Milan earlier tonight, and his leadership held the visitors’ back five together.

Champions League equation – as it stands.

AC Milan need a win at Atalanta to guarantee their place in the Champions League, but a failure to win the game could still see them qualify if either Juventus or Napoli fail to win their respective games.

Milan are currently third on 76 points, and Napoli are just behind on goal difference. Juventus have 75 points, and all three sides could end up securing Champions League football in the end.
