Southampton 1-0 Liverpool: Danny Ings scored against former club

Klopp Liverpool unlikely to have very busy transfer window

Southampton picked up a stunning 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League earlier tonight.

Danny Ings scored the opening goal of the game two minutes in and the home side managed to contain the Liverpool attack after that.

The Reds had just one shot on target throughout the ninety minutes and Jurgen Klopp will be thoroughly disappointed with the performance of his players.

Liverpool were lacking in ideas in the final third and the midfield failed to control the tempo of the game. Southampton on the other hand were full of energy and determination in the first half. They managed to harass the visitors with their pressing and then they defended well in the second half.

Juergen Klopp’s men have now dropped nine points against the likes of Fulham, Newcastle, West Brom and Southampton.

They had a comfortable lead at the top of the table but now the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United can overtake them if they manage to win their game in hand.

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can bounce back from this strongly in the coming weeks.

Judging by their recent performances it seems that the title defence might be beyond Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

Liverpool missed someone like Diogo Jota tonight and the Portuguese international could have made a difference for them especially with the kind of possession, they had tonight.

The Reds enjoyed 67% ball possession and they had 17 shots. However, their efforts lacked accuracy and the cutting edge was missing in the final third.

The Reds will now take on Manchester United in their next league game and it could be a massive match-up in the context of the title race.
