Zenit 1-2 Dortmund: Witsel inspires Dortmund to a brilliant turnaround

Axel Witsel-Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund made sure they will be staying at the top of the group after matchday 6.

Borussia Dortmund have produced a stunning turnaround against tough Zenit side after Axel Witsel scored the late winner.

Zenit proved to be a menace at the start as the likes of Sardar Azmoun and former Barcelona star Malcolm caused serious trouble to Dortmund’s defence.

The hosts soon got their reward after Sebastian Driussi scored the opening goal in the 16th minute, combining brilliantly with the right-back Sutormin.

Dortmund, who looked apathetic throughout the first half, came close to getting their equaliser before the half time whistle when Marco Reus had his curling effort hit the post.

Die Borussen showed their intentions from the start of the second half and it looked as an equaliser was on the cards.

Unsurprisingly, Lucian Favre’s men levelled up when centre-back Lukasz Piszczek found the nets after Mat Hummels’ shot was parried away from the goalkeeper Kerzhakov.

The visitors went on to find the winner through Axel Witsel’s left-footed strike from outside the box.

Zenit, although they knew that they can’t progress to the knockouts, would be ruing over their complacency in the front of attack as they had plenty of opportunities to punish Dortmund on the counter.

Dortmund teenager Youssoufa Moukoko created headlines when he came as a substitute, thus becoming the youngest player ever in the Champions League history.

Now the win will keep Dortmund at the top of the group while Lazio, who drew with Club Brugge, end up second.
