Portuguese international Bruno Fernandes has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is not the most important player in the national team set up, and their strength is their unity.

Ronaldo is a top-class player who makes a massive difference for Portugal in every game, but Fernandes believes that the secret to their success is the contribution from all of the players in the side.

He said: “Ronaldo is influential, as always. He is another one who wants to do his best and is making a difference. The most valuable player in the national team is the ‘we’. The ‘we’ is the most important, there are many Is, but the ‘us’ is what counts.”

Portugal are currently busy defending their European Championship title this summer, and they have made an impressive start to the campaign with a 3-0 win over Hungary.

Cristiano Ronaldo managed to score a brace for his side in the game, and it will be interesting to see if he can help his country win the Euros once again. Furthermore, the Juventus star managed to establish himself as the top scorer in the history of the European Championships with 11 goals in the tournament so far.

Fernandes added: “I think he is decisive already. He scored two goals in an important moment. Everyone knows about his quality and the capacity and facility to score goals he has,” the midfielder said at a press conference.

“However, the most important thing here, as Cristiano Ronaldo already pointed out, is the group and how everybody is giving their very best for our country.

“He is also doing his best, and he did it in the best possible way in the last match.”

Bruno Fernandes’ remarks certainly make a lot of sense.

Portugal have been a formidable outfit over the last five years, and that would not have been possible if they were reliant on just one player.

The Portuguese side are clearly one of the most balanced teams in the competition this year, and they will certainly be one of the favourites to win the tournament next month.
