Lorenzo Pellegrini has been injured ahead of the opening game against Turkey.

Italy have been dealt a blow as Lorenzo Pellegrini got injured ahead of Euro 2020.

The Azzurri will meet Turkey in the opening game of the European Championship on Friday.

Now, Italy have requested UEFA to bring in a replacement for AS Roma star, and Fiorentina’s Gaetano Castrovilli turns out to be the chosen one.

A statement from FIGC (Italian Football Federation) read:

“The FIGC has submitted a request to UEFA surrounding the possibility of replacing Lorenzo Pellegrini, who, in training yesterday, picked up an injury.

“He was taken for a scan this morning and will nonetheless remain part of the group, which will travel to Rome this morning. In anticipation of an answer from UEFA, Gaetano Castrovilli will join up with the group in Rome.”

OFFICIAL: Italy have confirmed Lorenzo Pellegrini has suffered an injury and have requested to UEFA to replace him with Gaetano Castrovilli.

Pellegrini managed to secure a place in Roberto Mancini’s final 26-man squad after an impressive season in Serie A, racking up 7 goals and 6 assists.

However, Castrovilli has been equally impressive for La Viola in the recently concluded season. The 23-year-old central midfielder ended up racking 5 goals and 3 assists.

Italy have been drawn in Group A alongside Turkey, Switzerland and Wales and deemed as one of the strongest sides in the tournament.

Mancini has maintained a perfect record since taking charge as the manager of Italy, winning 23 games out of 32 and suffering only 2 defeats in the process.

Now, the former Manchester City gaffer would look to make a statement in Europe’s most coveted competition.
