Phil Foden has been Gareth Southgate’s first choice in Euro 2020 so far.

Former Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has insisted Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish to start in the forthcoming games in Euro 2020.

Rooney also feels that Phil Foden is not an excellent dribbler to play as a winger for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Rooney said: “City play in the final third. They keep possession there. And Foden is not a dribbler but a player who plays nice little passes and moves into good positions. At City, the movement of players around him enables it.

Manchester City will play quick five-yard passes before a bit of movement — not a big one — will free Foden up, and he has the licence to go into the spaces and play as a Number-9, at times, or Number-10 at others. Whereas with England, he is a bit isolated out wide, and when he receives the ball, the possession is slow, and there is little happening around him.

“That means he then has to dribble — and if you are playing in such a way that, from your wide players, dribbling is what is required, then why not play Grealish and Jadon Sancho, two of the best at doing it.”

Foden might not have given his best yet for Three Lions; however, we were able to get a glimpse of his quality in both games.

Furthermore, he is coming on the back of a spectacular season with Man City. As a result, the expectations would be higher for him.

Rooney’s take on Foden comes as a bit of surprise since the rest of his attacking partners Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, are clearly struggling to find their feet despite being the experienced campaigners.

England, who played a stalemate against Scotland, will look to bounce back in their final group stage game against the impressive Czech Republic.
