Sampdoria

Sampdoria will look to make it two wins in two games when they face Napoli on Sunday.

The hosts made a winning return to league action as they recorded a 2-1 away win over Sassuolo in their first game since the World Cup break.

The win ended a four-game Serie A losing run which for the hosts started just before the winter break, leaving them at risk of posting the club’s worst run of defeats in over a decade upon their return.

But, with their latest win, they now move within five points of the dotted line. Manager Dejan Stanković will hope that victory is a turning point for his side after failing to win six of his eight games in charge so far (W2, D1, L5).

The Serbian highlighted that he views the restart as a “new season”, with every game a cup final. And those statements especially ring true considering Sampdoria are enduring their worst top-flight start to a season in club history; one made worse by their current winless home league record (D2, L6).

Possible Sampdoria starting line-up

Emil Audero, Bartosz Bereszynski, Bram Nuytinck, Jeison Murillo, Mehdi Léris, Tomas Rincon, Valerio Verre, Ronaldo Vieira, Tommaso Augello, Manolo Gabbiadini, Sam Lammers.

Injured: Harry Winks, Manuel De Luca, Fabio Quagliarella

Doubtful: Ignacio Pussetto

Suspended: Bruno Amione

Napoli

While the restart was great for Sampdoria, the same cannot be said for Napoli, who made a losing return to league action.

The Serie A leaders had gone into the World Cup break as one of the two teams yet to taste defeat in the domestic league. But that record was broken last time out as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Inter Milan.

The loss ended an eleven-game winning run in the league for the Parthenopeans, who will enter this game as a wounded beast.

But despite posting a “subpar” performance in that loss, according to manager Luciano Spalletti, this still remains Napoli’s best-ever top-flight record after 16 rounds as they seek a first Serie A title since 1989/90 in the days of Diego Maradona.

They remain top of the league table, leading AC Milan by five points. And with four of the teams placed between 2nd and 8th playing each other during this round, a victory could see Napoli extend their lead at the top.

They remain unbeaten as pre-match favourites in league action this season, too (W12, D2), and having scored six unanswered goals in their last two away H2Hs, many will expect that record to continue here.

Possible Napoli starting line-up

Alex Meret, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Amir Rrahmani, Min-Jae Kim, Mathías Olivera, Andre Zambo Anguissa, Stanislav Lobotka, Piotr Zielinski, Matteo Politano, Victor Osimhen, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
