History

LaLiga Santander is the official name of the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División. La Liga was established in 1928 by José María Acha following the need of a national league in Spain. Barcelona won the very first Liga in 1929.

La Liga has been the best league in Europe for seven consecutive years, according to UEFA’s league coefficient rankings. La Liga has the most UEFA Champions League (18), UEFA Europa League (12), UEFA Super Cup (15), and FIFA Club World Cup (7) titles, and its players have the most Ballon d’Or awards (7). (23)

Format

During the establishment, the number of teams was 10, which gradually increased over time. Right now, in season 20 teams participate and play in a double round-robin format where each team faces all their opponents twice, in the home and away games. A total of 38 games are played, and they rank based on total points, goal differential and goals scored are used to rate teams. Teams are considered to be in the same place if they are all equal. A play-off match at a neutral site determines rank if there is a tie for the title, promotion, or qualification to other competitions.

Number of teams

The Premier League features 20 teams every season. At the end of the season, the bottom three teams are relegated to the second division, while the top three teams in the second division take their place.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the most successful team who have won 34 times and 26 times respectively.

Top Teams

Barcelona was the inaugural champion in 1929, while Real Madrid won their first championship in 1932.

Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia are some of the other big contenders who have dominated in their share of time.
