Serie A

History

The Scudetto and Coppa Campioni d’Italia are awarded to the winner of Serie A, a professional league competition for football clubs at the top of the Italian football league structure. From the 1929–30 season onwards, the Italian Football Championship was changed from having regional and interregional rounds to a single-tier league.

The Serie A football league is one of the most illustrious in the world. Juventus, Milan, and Internazionale are three of the world’s most successful clubs, all founding members of the G-14, a party that comprised the largest and most prestigious European football clubs from 2000 to 2008.

Format

Historically, the number of clubs was 16-18. Currently, 20 teams participate during a season, and each of the teams faces all the opponents twice, in the home and away matches. A total of 38 games are played, and they rank based on total points, goal differential and goals scored are used to rate teams. Teams are considered to be in the same place if they are all equal. A play-off match at a neutral site determines rank if there is a tie for the title, promotion, or qualification to other competitions.

Number of teams

The Premier League features 20 teams every season. At the end of the season, the bottom three teams are relegated to the second division, while the top three teams in the second division take their place.

Juventus, Milan, and Internazionale are three of the most successful team in the league.

Top Teams

Juventus, Milan, and Internazionale have won 70% of the championship, with Juventus winning it a record 36 times.

The rest of the titles are divided among ten teams, with Sampdoria, Hellas Verona, Novese, Casale, Cagliari winning it once each.

  • Gianluigi Buffon received the best goalkeepers award highest number of times in the league (4).

The Greats

Serie A has been the home of great players, great managers and great teams. Over the course, Serie A has registered some records under the name of the Greats.

Gianluigi Buffon has won the most number of Serie A(10).

Juventus is the most successful club in the domestic circuit with 36 titles that are the highest by any club in any league.

Serie A Legends

Giuseppe Meazza was his era’s ultimate goalscorer. Meazza, who was known for his carousing and finishing, is still fourth all-time in Serie A, scoring with 216 goals.

Gianluigi Buffon is the most fantastic goalkeeper Italy has ever produced and quite probably the best in the world. His positioning, strength, and reflexes have made him one of the game’s most celebrated shot-stoppers.

Andrea Pirlo is the best midfielder Italy has ever produced, and he has set numerous records during his time with Juventus. In every way, a true legend.

Paolo Maldini has a slew of club and country records under his belt. Maldini played in a total of 902 games for Milan in all competitions, with 647 of them coming in Serie A. Since the 1985-86 season, when he was 17 years old, he has been a member of the starting XI.

Juventus is leading the charts with 109 wins against 95 of AC Milan.
