Freiburg

Freiburg will look to make it five wins in five games when they host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday.

The hosts have enjoyed a remarkable season so far having won four of their opening five games to sit top of the Bundesliga table for the first time in 20 years.

Having secured a top six finish last season, they have pushed even further this season under Christian Streich, who is now the longest-serving current Bundesliga boss.

His side have proved too difficult to beat these days and came from behind last weekend to beat a more fancied Bayer Leverkusen side.

They come into this tie on the back of a 2-1 win over Qarabag in the opening round of the Europa League, taking their winning run in all competitions to four games.

The win would have further boosted confidence for the home team, who would be happy about the returns of the shrewd business that’s been done over the summer, with three new signings scoring across the last two games.

Despite their lofty heights, they will still come into this round humble and with their foot on the ground given that the l time Streich guided them to a fifth-placed finish in 2012/13, they finished in a lowly 14th place the next season.

Their manager recently suggested that the goal for this season is simply to avoid relegation. So his team will come into this tie keen on keeping their winning run and place at the top of the table for another matchday.

Possible Freiburg starting line-up

Mark Flekken; Kiliann Sildillia, Matthias Ginter, Philip Lienhart, Christian Gunter; Yanick Keitel, Nicolas Hofler; Roland Sallai, Vincenzo Grifo, Ritsu Doan; Michael Gregoritsch. .

Injured: Kimberly Ezekwem, Lucas Holer, Kevin Schade, Lukas Kubler, Maximilian Eggestein.

Borussiaa Mönchengladbach

Despite tasting their first defeat of the season last weekend, Borussia Mönchengladbach come into this tie in gold shape.

The visitors had been one of the better performers in the opening weeks of the season and even held Bayern Munich to a credible 1-1 draw in the third round of the season. But they succumbed to a narrow 1-0 loss to Mainz last weekend despite seeing more of the ball in the game and having more chances.

They will now hope to bounce back from that loss against a Freiburg side that could be feeling the strains of playing in Europe. Daniel Farke’s side are without the distraction of European football this season and so will come into this tie the fresher of both teams.

But with defender Ko Itakura absent from this game after receiving his first red card in just his fifth appearance for Gladbach in their last game, bouncing back from defeat could be a little harder.

However, the visitors may be quietly confident of getting something here, as strong-travelling Gladbach are enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run in competitive trips (W3, D4).

Possible Borussia Mönchengladbach starting line-up

Yann Sommer; Joe Scally, Ko Itakura, Nico Elvedi, Luca Netz; Christoph Kramer, Manu Kone, Florian Neuhaus; Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea, Jonas Hofmann.

Injured: Stefan Lainer, Conor Noss, Torben Musel

Doubtful: None

Suspended: Ko Itakura
