Tottenham Hotspur‘s participation in the UEFA Europa Conference League is under serious threat because of the Coronavirus outbreak at the club earlier this week.

The Premier League side had to postpone their midweek European clash against French outfit Rennes and their weekend Premier League fixture against Brighton had to be postponed as well.

According to reports, the Premier League side wanted to play the conference league game on the 15th of December. However, the French outfit are not keen on rescheduling the match on that date as it is not clear that the Premier League club’s Coronavirus outbreak will be under control by then.

As things stand, Dutch outfit Vitesse have overtaken Tottenham in their group with a 3-1 win over NS Mura. If Tottenham are forced to forfeit their game against Rennes, they could be dumped out of the competition.

The UEFA Europa Conference League is probably Tottenham’s best chance of winning a trophy this season and it would be a devastating blow to the Premier League club if they have to forfeit the contest through no fault of their own.

It will be interesting to see UEFA sort out this situation in the coming days. The Dutch outfit will be hoping that the UEFA control, ethics and disciplinary body will make a conclusive decision on the matter soon.

Vitesse released a statement on the situation earlier stating: “Vitesse has been in the waiting room of the UEFA Europa Conference League since the 3-1 victory over NŠ Mura, because the game between Tottenham Hotspur and Stade Rennais FC was cancelled after a Corona outbreak.

“On Saturday it became clear that this game has been definitively cancelled, but at the same time, Vitesse is still awaiting a decision about the exact consequences of this.

“Tottenham Hotspur vs Stade Rennais FC will definitely no longer be played, because no alternative date could be found in consultation with both clubs in recent days.

“The situation is now in the hands of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body, which will make a decision on the further course of Group G in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

“Vitesse is in contact with UEFA, but it could take a few more days before the European Football Association’s disciplinary committee makes a decision.
