Diego Simeone admits he could leave Atletico Madrid at the end of current season

Diego Simeone could loose four of Atletico Madrid core players

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has suggested he could leave Atletico Madrid next year following a shocking loss to third-tier side Cornella on Wednesday.

The Argentine, whose side were at the end of a shocking Copa del Rey loss to third-tier side Cornella on Wednesday, hinted at the idea he could be in his last days at Atletico Madrid.

Despite starting the game with a host of first-team stars, including record signing Joao Felix, Simeone saw his side succumb to a shameful defeat that saw them fail to record a single shot on target throughout the game.

The Rojiblancos are flying high in the league but have found it difficult in recent seasons in one-off knockout matches, having lost to RB Leipzig in last season’s Champions League semi-final match. They also lost to Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey last season and haven’t beaten a fellow La Liga team in the competition since 2017.

And Simeone, while speaking to the press after the game, has hinted that his future is far from certain in Madrid.

“Cornella played better,” he said.

“In the whole game, what they wanted was always done better than what we wanted.

“They took advantage of the set-piece situations and immediately found the goal.

“The boys tried to compete in the best way. In the first half, we had more chances, and in the second, it was rockier. It got difficult after the red card.

“This competition has not given us satisfaction in recent years, but solutions will have to be found if we are here next year.”

The 50-year-old has managed Atletico on 502 occasions, winning 302 times and losing 118 times. His side currently sit top of the La Liga two points ahead of Real Madrid in second, having played two games less.
