Lorient

Lorient will look to return to winning ways when they play host to PSG at the Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir on Sunday.

The home side have looked like a different outfit altogether under the instructions of Regis Le Bris. Gone are the days of Christophe Pélissier, who took the club to a 16th-placed finish in consecutive seasons since gaining promotion with them in the 2019/2020 season.

With the appointment of the relatively unknown Regis Le Bris who hitherto had no coaching experience at the elite level, except for his time with the Lorient youth teams, Les Merlus took a big gamble which seems to have paid off, at least for the time being.

Lorient find themselves in the mix of an unprecedented top-four race and are currently seated in the fourth position after 13 rounds of Ligue 1 football.

However, Les Merlus are on the verge of watching their hard work go down the drain as they are yet to win a game since a 1-2 victory over Brest in game week 10 back in October which was a sixth consecutive win for the Lorient at the time.

The hosts come into this game off the back of a 1-2 loss to OGC Nice last weekend. Despite taking the lead in the 15th minute through a Dango Outtara strike, the home side managed to relinquish their lead as Nice staged a comeback in the second half to steal all three points from them.

With just three points separating them from Marseille in fifth place, Lorient cannot afford to lose more ground on the race and must pick all possible points on the offing to ensure that they do not lose their chance to book a place in the Champions League come next season.

Regis Le Bris will now ready his side for the visit of champions PSG, and the French coach will be hoping that his side can finally break their three games winless jinx against the runaway league winners. However, Lorient will have to be at their best as they face the daunting task of taking on Christophe Galtier’s star-studded side.

Possible Lorient starting line-up

Yvon Mvogo; Gedeon Kalulu, Julien Laporte, Montassar Talbi, Vincent Le Goff; Bonke Innocent, Stephane Diarra, Enzo Le Fee, Julien Ponceau, Dango Ouattara; Terem Moffi.

Injured: Samuel Loric, Laurent Abergel

PSG

PSG will be gunning for their sixth straight win in all competitions, and their 12th in Ligue 1.

The Parisians come into this game off the back of a 1-2 win over Juventus in the Champions League as they wrapped up their group-stage games.

Lionel Messi continued his fine form for the capital club this season by grabbing his 14th assist of the season when he set up Kylian Mbappe for the opener in the 13th minute. Juventus pulled level through Leonardo Bonucci before the break. But the Parisians continued to search for the winning goal after the break and it took substitute Nuno Mendes who scored less than one minute upon coming on, latching onto a defence-splitting pass from Kylian Mbappe and making a light work of Juan Cuadrado before firing a low drive past a hapless Wojciech Szczesny to put PSG in front.

Even so, the win was not enough to secure the top spot for Christophe Galtier’s side as Benfica thrashed Maccabi Haifa 1-6 to go top, leaving PSG with the prospect of being drawn against a formidable opponent in the knockout rounds.

However, PSG have remained impeccable in the French topflight and are yet to taste defeat this season.

The Parisians edged out Troyes in a seven-goal thriller in their last outing in the Ligue 1. A brace from Mama Samba Balde on either side of the half and a late strike from Ante Palaversa were not enough to stop Christophe Galtier’s side from romping to their eleventh win in Ligue 1 with Carlos Soler, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar Jr and Lionel Messi all netting to get the win.

The French coach will now look to see his side pick up all three points against Lorient as they continue their march to an unprecedented eleventh Ligue 1 crown.

Nonetheless, the Stade Yves Allainmat-Le Moustoir has been somewhat of a weak spot for the champions who have won just once in their last three visits to Ploemeur. Yet still, PSG come into this game on form as has never been seen in recent years, and will be tipped to take all three points away from the top four contenders.

Possible PSG starting line-up

Gianluigi Donnarumma; Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes; Renato Sanches, Marco Verratti, Vitinha; Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe.

Injured: Fabian Ruiz, Presnel Kimpembe, Keylor Navas
