Barcelona’s poor start to the season could help Liverpool keep Gini Wijnaldum

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has been linked with a move away from Anfield for a while now.

The Dutch international will be a free agent at the end of this season and it appears that Barcelona are keen on securing his services.

The former Netherlands national team manager Ronald Koeman is in charge of the Spanish outfit and he wants a reunion with Wijnaldum at club level. When he joined Barcelona, he informed the Spanish club of his desire to sign Wijnaldum as a priority target.

Barcelona have started this season poorly and it will be interesting to see where they finish in the table eventually.

Wijnaldum is a top-class player who will want to play at the highest level and challenge for trophies regularly.

If Barcelona do not improve their form it could be difficult for them to lure players of his calibre.

The Liverpool midfielder has won the Champions League and the Premier League with the Reds and Jurgen Klopp’s side are in contention for both trophies this year as well.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are ninth in the Spanish League table with just 14 points from 10 matches. A club of their stature will be expected to win the Spanish league and if they fail to do so, Koeman will be under immense pressure at the end of the season.

He might not get the freedom to sign his preferred players if he fails to impress this year.

The pressure on the Dutch manager right now could eventually help Liverpool keep Gini Wijnaldum at the club for the long run.
