Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle: Werner ends goal drought to guide the Blues into the top four

Timo Werner-Chelsea

Chelsea picked up a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League earlier tonight.

The Blues have been excellent defensively since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and they picked up another clean sheet against the magpies.

The Blues are now up to 4th in the Premier League table overtaking reigning champions Liverpool.

After the significant summer outlay, Roman Abramovich will demand his side qualify for Champions League football at the very least and Tuchel’s men are certainly on the right path.

Olivier Giroud scored the opening goal of the game for the Blues on the 31st minute and German international Timo Werner ended his goal drought to double Chelsea’s advantage eight minutes later.

Newcastle seemed toothless throughout the game and the injury to Callum Wilson seems to have affected them massively. They lacked a cutting edge upfront.

Chelsea were dominant from start to finish and they deserved to pick up all three points here.

Another positive for the home side was that Thomas Tuchel decided to give Kepa Arrizabalaga another chance to prove himself at the club and the Spaniard produced some impressive saves from Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock in the second half.

The defeat tonight leaves Newcastle 17th in the table seven points above the drop zone. They will have to improve a lot if they want to beat the drop.
