Chelsea

Chelsea’s inconsistent run in the Premier League continued on Wednesday as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Brighton. Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring for the Stamford Bridge side from a corner, but Brighton snatched a late equaliser through the returning Danny Welbeck.

The result means that Chelsea come into this round of games sitting in second place and eight points behind table-topping Manchester City.

Although they are unbeaten across their last five league games, they have won only two of those games, keeping only one clean sheet in that period.

Thomas Tuchel’s men have been unlucky with injuries this season. They also lost the in-form Reece James to an injury in their game against Brighton, compounding their misery and leaving the German coach without his creative hub.

He will have to find a workable line-up against Liverpool, who will be desperate to leapfrog them to second place. However, Tuchel’s record against Klopp suggests that the hosts are in for a long day. The former PSG and Dortmund boss has met his German counterpart 16 times in the past. In that period, he has lost nine times, winning only three games and drawing four times.

He will hope that his outcome against Klopp is positive this time.

Possible Chelsea starting line-up

Edouard Mendy; Trevoh Chalobah, Malang Sarr, Antonio Rudiger; Ceaser Azpilicueta, Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Marcos Alonso; Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Romelu Lukaku.

Injured: Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Reece James

Doubtful: Andre Christensen, Timo Werner, Ruben Loftus-Cheek

Suspended: None

Liverpool

Liverpool will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to London on Sunday for their first game in 2021.

The Reds, for all their dominance in their last outing, could not beat Leicester City, eventually losing 1-0 in the game. Mohamed Salah missed a rare first-half penalty in what was a disappointing night before Ademola Lookman came off from the bench to score the only goal in the match.

The loss ended Liverpool’s ten-game-winning run in all competitions. It was also the first time the visitors have failed to score in 30 games.

Klopp’s men come into this tie sitting in third place, nine points behind Man City, having played a game less. They can overtake Chelsea with a win in this game, and they will be desperate to pick up maximum points to avoid falling further behind the top.

Possible Liverpool starting line-up

Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahim Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Konstantinos Tsimikas; Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain; Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah.

Injured: Divock Origi, Nat Phillips, Adrian, Harvey Elliot

Doubtful: Takimu Minamino, Thiago Alcantara

Suspended: Andrew Robertson

Prediction

Chelsea 1-3 Liverpool
