Roma manager Jose Mourinho has had a career riddled with clashes with several of his players and adversaries over the years.

Mourinho is one of the most successful managers of his generation, but he can be a difficult person to work with.

Here at Anytime football, we look at five players who have had a torrid time under the management of the Portuguese manager. Still, Mourinho has had his opinion about them proven right over the course of time.

Luke Shaw

The Manchester United defender had constant problems with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Mourinho criticised the player publicly time and again, and he even claimed that Luke Shaw would have to change his footballing brain to succeed at the club.

Furthermore, he also questioned the England left-back’s desire in training, stating that he is a long way behind his teammates in terms of commitment.

Mourinho even questioned Luke Shaw’s set-pieces during England’s euro 2020 campaign.

Dele Alli

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had his fair share of problems with Mourinho, and it was there for everyone to see during Tottenham’s all-or-nothing documentary.

Mourinho criticised the midfielder for his inconsistencies and warned him that he would have to change his lifestyle to fulfil his tremendous potential.

Dele Alli never quite grasped Mourinho’s advice and the result is quite evident.

The midfielder was recently sold to Everton after failing to establish himself as a key player under Antonio Conte.

 Anthony Martial

The Manchester United striker was recently loaned out to the Spanish side Sevilla.

The French international had a falling out with Mourinho during their time together at Old Trafford.

Mourinho claimed that Martial is mentally weak, and his teammates cannot rely on him during important moments.

Now years on, it is evident that Martial has struggled to establish himself as a key player for Manchester United, and he had to leave on loan in search of regular game time.

Tanguy Ndombele

Tanguy Ndombele has had a difficult time since his move to Tottenham, and he had to endure tough love from the former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

In an interview, the midfielder has revealed that Mourinho was tough with him to get him out of his comfort zone.

The Frenchman later admitted that Mourinho’s treatment worked wonders and helped him improve at the London club.

Paul Pogba

The Frenchman arrived at Old Trafford for a club-record fee, but he has not been able to justify the outlay so far.

Pogba had a complicated relationship with Mourinho, and the former Manchester United manager criticises him publicly time and again.

The pair had a training ground bust-up in front of the TV cameras back in 2018 as well.

Paul Pogba accused Mourinho of alienating his players without explanation.

Since then, the Portuguese manager has left the Premier League club, and he is managing Roma now. Still, Pogba is yet to showcase his world-class form for Manchester United consistently.
