Thiago Alcantara rejected last-minute Barcelona interest before Liverpool transfer

Arsenal join Liverpool in the race for Thiago Alcantara

The Spaniard had turned down a last-minute offer from his former club.

Thiago Alcantara has rejected a last-minute offer from his former club Barcelona before moving to Liverpool.

According to reports, Barcelona came up with a last-ditch effort to re-sign the 29-year-old only for him to turn down the offer.

Thiago, who moved from Bayern to Liverpool on a fee worth 30m euros, had already made up his mind on where to play next, that is at Anfield.

It has been revealed that Jurgen Klopp also played a huge role behind the transfer as he persuaded the Spanish midfielder to join Liverpool through several video chats.

Although Barca were interested in signing Thiago, Ronald Koeman’s priority turned out to be Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum’s position was also doubted with the arrival of Thiago however the Dutchman ended up staying with the Reds.

Despite Koeman confirming the interest in his compatriot, Wijnaldum earlier stated the offer from the Catalans wasn’t serious. Still, the former Newcastle United said that anything could happen in future, with his contract expiring next year.

Thiago is coming on the back of a stellar season with Bayern – his last though, winning a continental treble under Hansi Flick. The former La Masia graduate was also instrumental to Bayern’s success over the course after joining them in 2015.

Thiago was absent during Liverpool’s 7-2 humiliating defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League after he tested positive for CoronaVirus. He is set to return for the weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
