Man City 0-2 Man United: Fernandes, Shaw end City’s winning streak at Etihad

Bruno Fernandes-Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw were on the scoresheet to hand Manchester City their first defeat after 21 games.

Manchester United were able to end the 21-match unbeaten run of Manchester City by defeating them 2-0 at Etihad.

United entered the game after three consecutive goalless draws in all competitions and they looked desperate for a win

Perhaps, they got off to a dream start as they won a penalty after Gabriel Jesus’ foul on Anthony Martial inside the box. Bruno Fernandes successfully converted the penalty to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.

Luke Shaw doubled the lead early on in the second half, which turned out to be the winning goal as United picked up a comfortable away win against the table leaders.

City looked unstoppable with their dream run but their arch-rivals United threw a spanner in their works.

Nevertheless, Citizens are still leading the table by 11 points and United should hope for a miracle to turn things around in their favour.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be happy to see the Reds end their three-match winless run in style while Pep Guardiola will be seeing this defeat as a wake-up call.

Guardiola offered his verdict on the defeat, stating that there were games when City won games even without playing well.

“It is important to consider how we played whether we win or lose.

“I am pretty sure that after we won games lately, that this was going to happen.

“Congratulations to Man United for the victory. We conceded the first goal against a tough team and they are so strong so it was so difficult.

“After the first goal, for the first 5-10 mins we were a little bit out but after that we came back to the game.

“For example, we played much better than we did against West Ham when we perhaps didn’t deserve three points.”
