Manchester City were held to a draw by West Brom on Wednesday with an inspired between the sticks denying Pep Guardiola’s team. After what was a lacklustre performance in Saturday’s derby, the Cityzens were once again denied a win after an own-goal by Ruben Dias just before the break cancelled out Ilkay Gundogan’s opener.
The host started the better of both sides but could have been behind in the 5th minute, but Grant could only shoot straight at Ederson.
Pep Guardiola’s men controlled proceedings and were ahead in the 30th minute when Gündoğan slammed home following a Raheem Sterling cutback. The goal was Gundogan’s first in the premier league in over a year and was the least City deserved for controlling much of the ball.
Cancelo could have doubled his side’s lead in the 38th minute but could only head wide from a De Bruyne’s deep corner.
West Brom were soon level against the run of play in the 43rd minute when Ruben Dias diverted Ajayi’s shot into his own net.
The hosts came out flying in the restart but could not find a way past the West Brom back line that had Johnstone in inspired form. The keeper thwarted De Bruyne in the 85th minute from a free-kick, while Aguero could only blaze over in the 88th minute after being slipped through by Raheem Sterling.
With four minutes added on, Pep Guardiola’s side could have nicked a win, but they were denied twice by Johnston—the keeper saving twice from point-blank range to deny Gündoğan and Sterling after De Bruyne had fed the two players.
The result means Manchester City climb to sixth place while West Brom remain in 19th place after 13 games.
The hosts return to action on Saturday as they take on high flying Southampton while West Brom host Aston Villa in their next PL fixture.
