Manchester City have confirmed the signing of England international midfielder Kalvin Phillips on their official website.

The 26 year old has signed a six year contract with the Premier League champions and City will pay a fee of around £42m for the defensive midfielder.

Phillips has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and he should prove to be a solid long term signing for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The England international was excellent for his country in the Euros as well. He will be hoping to cement his place in the City line-up ahead of the World Cup now.

Manchester City lost Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho on a free transfer earlier this summer and Phillips has been brought in as his replacement. It will be interesting to see if he can adapt to Guardiola’s style of play and make an immediate impact.

Ideally, he shouldn’t have any issues with City’s attacking approach because he has played similar football under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds.

The 26 year old is yet to reach his peak and someone like Guardiola could take him to a higher level. The Spaniard is a world class coach who has improved several players during his time at City.

Phillips has all the talent to justify the £42m outlay and the move could look like a bargain in a few years.

City have been very active in the transfer market this summer and they have addressed major weaknesses in their side with the signings of Erling Harland, Julian Alvarez and Phillips.

The former Leeds ace is likely to partner Rodri at the heart of City’s midfield next season and it remains to be seen whether he can help his side win the Champions League, a trophy that has eluded Guardiola and City so far.
