RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann has revealed how the Premier League teams can stop Timo Werner next season.
Speaking to the media, Nagelsmann explained that he might not have started Werner in the game against Atletico Madrid for tactical reasons.
Leipzig managed to beat the Spanish side 2-1 to reach the semi finals of the Champions League this season and the German manager believes that Werner is ineffective without space in behind the opposition defence.
Nagelsmann said: “The opponents are not perhaps the best for Timo Werner because there’s not a lot of space behind the defensive line. Today we decided to play with three offensive midfielders to create the spaces between the lines, and all the three midfielders did very well.”
Atletico are known to defend deep and Werner would have struggled against a low block.
The young German forward had a fantastic season with Leipzig before joining Chelsea and he scored 34 goals in total for the Bundesliga outfit.
Like every player Werner has his weaknesses and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the Premier League now.
Premier League defences will look to close down the space and defend deep against his pace now.
Nagelsmann’s comments will certainly worry Chelsea and they might have to adapt their tactics in order to get the best out of their marquee signing.
That said, the 24-year-old is a world class talent and he will certainly be able to adapt and modify his game. He will be expected to have a big impact in the Premier League next season.
