Atalanta

Atalanta will look to build on their impressive start to the season when they welcome Fiorentina to Bergamo this Sunday.

The hosts are one of the two Serie A sides yet to suffer a league defeat this term having won five of their opening seven games (D2). They spent the international break joint-top of the league after a surprise 1-0 victory away to Roma last time out.

La Dea have built their strong start to the season on a stingy back line that has conceded just three goals this season–the lowest in the league so far. For a team that was famed for being attack-minded and often the highest scoring side in the league, their newfound defensive resilience has gone away from the norm.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini explained their more recent solid defensive displays are down to having “many faces” and being able to choose between different versions of themselves.

They will look to continue on that trajectory this round as they look to gatecrash the title race which traditionally have had AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus as the leading names. But with the trio still trying to find their footing, and with Napoli involved in Europe, the hosts can establish themselves at the top of the table if they keep churning out results.

However, a key part of their success who is goalkeeper Juan Musso will be missing in this game. The Argentine professional has played a big role in Atalanta’s robust defensive displays, but he suffered a fractured cheekbone and head injury only a few minutes into their most recent match at Roma and looks set to miss the contest here.

Without him, Atalanta will try to win just their second SA home game of the season (W1, D2) and lay down the foundations for a much better home showing than what they produced last season.

Possible Atalanta starting line-up

Marco Sportiello; Caleb Okoli, Rafael Toloi, Merih Demiral; Brandon Soppy, Marten De Roon, Teun Koopmeiners, Hans Hateboer; Ruslan Malinovsky, Ederson Jose, Rasmus Hojlund.

Injured: Juan Musso, Berat Djimsiti

Doubtful: Duvan Zapata

Suspended: None

Fiorentina

Fiorentina will look to make it two wins in two games when they travel to Bergamo this Sunday.

The visitors finally won their first game of the season when they beat Verona 2-0 last time out. The win ended a run of eight games without a win for Vincenzo Italiano’s men and will hopefully give them the launching pad to take back their season which has so far been terrible.

For a team that finished in the top seven places to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, Fiorentina come into this round of games sitting in tenth position having taken nine points from the available 21 (W2, D3, L2).

While that does not represent a very terrible return given that they are still just four points behind the top six, their return of one point from three away games is certainly terrible.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side have lost their last three away games in all competitions and have failed to score in four of their last five away games. They are winless in their last nine away games in all competitions (D2, L7) and so will travel to Bergamo desperate to give their travelling supporters something good to cheer about.

Possible Fiorentina starting line-up

Pietro Terracciano; Lorenzo Venuti, Igor, Martinez Quarta, Cristiano Biraghi; Rolando Mandragora, Giacomo Bonaventura, Antonin Barak; Riccardo Sottil, Christian Kouame, Jonathan Ikone.

Injured: Nikola Milenkovic, Gaetano Castroville, Sofyan Amrabat, Pierluigi Gollini, Dodo

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
