Napoli have confirmed former Inter Milan and Roma boss Luciano Spalletti as their new boss.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed the appointment in a statement on Twitter, revealing that the Italian will officially begin his reign as Napoli coach on July 1.

“I am delighted to announce that Luciano Spalletti will become Napoli coach on July 1,” Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis said in a short statement. “Welcome, Luciano – we’ll do great work together.”

I am pleased to announce that Luciano Spalletti will be the new Napoli coach starting from next July 1st. Welcome Luciano, together we will do a great job. Aurelio De Laurentiis

The 62-year-old returns to management after being away for two years. His last job was at Inter Milan, where he spent two seasons securing Champions League football for the San Siro side before stepping down in 2019.

The Italian won two Italian Cups and a SuperCup with Roma, and two Russian league titles and a cup win in his time at Zenit Saint-Petersburg.

Spalletti replaces Gennaro Gattuso, who left the club after missing out on a Champions League spot on the last day by one point. The former Italy midfielder has since been appointed Fiorentina coach after announcing he was leaving Napoli.

Spalletti is expected to guide the club back to the Champions League as their recent inability to finish within the top four means that they have missed out on the Champions League for two straight seasons.
