Roma handed 3-0 defeat against Verona after a surprising admin error

Roma were held to a 0-0 draw with Verona on the opening day of the season.

However, a 3-0 win has been awarded to Verona due to an admin error.

Roma’s decision to field Amadou Diawara against Verona has cost them three points. The midfielder had been registered as an under-22 player at the beginning of the season.

The Italian outfit failed to modify the records in time and they were duly punished. The former Napoli midfielder turned 23 on the 17th of July but he was registered as an U22 player during the game.

According to reports, Roma are planning to appeal the decision and it will be interesting to see if the punishment is reversed in the coming weeks.

Previously in 2016 Sassuolo had their 2-1 win over Pescara reversed to a 3-0 defeat due to a similar error.

A statement from the sporting justice read: “The sporting justice has read the information relative to the Verona vs. Roma match and having considered that Roma fielded a player who wasn’t included in the ’25-man squad list’ present on Sept. 14 at 12.14 p.m. CET, despite being ‘over 22’ is in violation of point eight of the Italian FA’s official N83/A statement from Nov. 20, 2014, which was later modified on Jun. 21, 2018, has decided to implement the sanction in accordance with point nine of said statement and therefore penalises Roma with the sporting punishment of a 3-0 defeat for the match”.
