Post 1995, the first Brazilian to win the award was Ronaldo Nazario. The prolific striker won the award for the first time in 1997 with Internazionale and then a second time in 2002 while playing for Real Madrid, but it was his performance at the 2002 World Cup that helped him win the award.
Rivaldo was the second Brazilian to win the award and he won it in 1999 while playing for Barcelona. In 2005, Ronaldinho became the third Brazilian to win the award and he too won the award while playing for the Catalan club.
The last Brazilian to win the award was Kaka with AC Milan in 2007. These four Brazilians were part of the Brazil team that won the World Cup in 2002.
